If there’s one thing we look for when searching for the best camping spot, it’s a good view. Nothing beats watching the sun set behind mountains in the distance or sipping your morning coffee as the fogs lifts over the valley. We love using Hipcamp to find the perfect private camping spot where the dogs can have space to run around and where we can enjoy a great view. We especially love heading to Upstate New York during leaf season for incredible fall colors. Here are our recommendations for dog friendly Upstate New York Hipcamp spots with amazing views.

Vast Private Oasis

Description: A vast and private oasis indeed. This spot has not only stunning panoramic views of the Green Mountains but also several miles of hiking trails and a two acre pond for swimming or paddling.

Amenities: Considered a “primitive camp site,” you must pack in and pack out. Two Adirondack chairs, a picnic table and fire pit are provided. Firewood and water are also available.

Reactivity Rating: 3/5. There are water fowl on property who had zero qualms about booking it down the hill and approaching us. While they eventually left us alone, they were often within sight. We camped by the picnic table so we recommend if traveling with a reactive dog, choose a spot elsewhere on property farther away from the main driveway and house. Fortunately, you have plenty of space to choose from!

Runamuk Farm

Description: Stay at the farmland site or one of three three wooded sites, all with views of the mountains. Sunrise and sunset are stunning, particularly in the fall.

Amenities: Camp stove, cooking supplies, water jugs and picnic table make up a nice outdoor setup, while an indoor table setting and coffee wait for you inside. Portable toilet and fire pit are on-site, and you get to spend the night in a comfy bed with warm blankets.

Reactivity Rating: 4/5. If you are traveling with a reactive dog, staying in one of the wooded sites guarantees you won’t encounter other animals during your stay. If you choose the one field site, know that you are likely to be visited by a number of cows. While a wire fence keeps them out, they can get very close.

Timbertrail Farm

Description: Okay, so this is not in New York. But it is right over the state line in Vermont. Spend the day in New York or Vermont and then wake up to sunrise over the Green Mountains on this 200-year-old farm. There is lots of space to set up in the open field or shaded trees.

Amenities: This site is pack in, pack out. Cooking equipment, fire pit and picnic table provided. Cold water shower and pit toilet at the site. Firewood and drinking water are available.

Reactivity Rating: 5/5. If traveling with a reactive dog, this is an ideal spot. You’ll likely pass some chickens on the property while driving to your site, but once there you’ll have the place to yourselves.

ADK Mountain View

Description: A former dairy farm, this working farm has several sites on its 150 acres, all with views of the Adirondack Mountains in the distance. While some sites are within view of each other, it still feels very private.

Amenities: Each site has its own outhouse, picnic table, two Adirondack chairs and fire ring with cooking grate. Drinking water is also available on the property.

Reactivity Rating: 4/5. We didn’t see any other animals during our time there or when driving to or from our site. However, a camper review on Hipcamp noted being approached by dogs when jogging in the morning. We recommend choosing a site down the hill away from the house if traveling with a reactive dog.
